MLB- Yankees Advance to the World Series after Beating Angels 5-2

It took six games, but the New York Yankees finally won the American League title – the 40th in franchise history – and, more importantly, earned a berth in the World Series. New York advanced after defeating the Los Angeles Angels 5-2 in Game 6 of the series on Sunday night. The Yankees, coming off a phenomenal season, were hoping to halt an alarming trend in team history that showed them making abrupt exits from the playoffs – 2005, 2006, and 2007. There was also their big choke in 2004, when the Yankees were eliminated from their series against the Boston Red Sox after being up 3-0. Now, they may no longer have a throne in the World Series, but they managed to eke out a spot nonetheless. Their opponents: the Los Angeles Angels, a team with remarkable defensive skills during the regular season, one that played incredibly well in a year when key players were were left out of the season due to injuries and when its young pitcher, 22-year old Nick Adenhart, died in a car accident. It was to Nick that the Angels dedicated their postseason. But Adenhart’s memory was not enough; the Angels made a number of errors in the AL series that lost them the title and a chance at the World Series. Game 6, at the Yankees’ brand-new stadium in Harlem, was fraught with tension: the Yankees needed only win for the title; the Angels wanted to push for a decisive Game 7. Whatever their motives, the teams left the first two innings scoreless. The Angels finally opened the score in the third after an RBI single by Bobby Abreu that sent catcher Jeff Mathis to home. The Yankees exploded back in the bottom of the fourth, reacting with 3 runs. Johnny Damon drove in the first two with a single to center lawn, while Alex Rodriguez used balls from Angels starter Joe Saunders to get on base. Derek Jeter walked home, and the Yankees were suddenly up 3-1. Andy Pettite made a great show for the Yankees in the next innings, preventing the Angels from closing the lead for six and a half innings. But in the eighth, Anaheim managed to reduce the Yankees’ advantage to one run on the board after star reliever Mariano Rivera was beat with a hit by Vladimir Guerrero. The score was now 3-2, Yankees. However, the Yankees managed to capitalize on mistakes from the suddenly error-prone Angels and extended their lead. Robinson Cano advanced on base with balls, and Angels pitcher Ervin Santana was relieved with lefty Scott Kazmir. Kazmir faced Nick Swisher, who sent the ball to the side of first base, but Kendry Morales let the ball from second baseman Howard Kendricks drop. Then Kazmir committed another costly error, flying his initial shot after fielding a ball from Melky Cabrera, a mistake that sent Cano to home plate to score yet again for the Yankees. Jeter was struck out, but Damon helped load the bases. Then Mark Teixeira hit a deep fly out to center to push in the second run of the inning and the fifth of the game. The game ended with a score of 5-2 in favor of the Yankees. “That’s what you play for. In order to win a World Series, you have to get there first,” said Rodriguez of the Yankees-Angels series. “I couldn’t be more excited. I feel like a 10-year-old kid. The whole year for me was about trusting my teammates and being one of the guys.” The Yankees will face the defending champions, the Philadelphia Phillies, in the World Series Opener on Wednesday night. Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee will face ALCS MVP CC Sabathia of the Yankees in a matchup that is sure to see intense action.

Mui Fa Jong Lion Dance performed by the Chen Brothers.

From my memory of the introduction, this particular dance depicted the Lion leaving his village to collect tea (of some sort, but apparently Very Special and Very Important) from the other side of the mountains. On the way back, however, some of the mountain had fallen away making the way more treacherous – will the lion make it back to his village? Only time will tell! (OK, we all know he’ll succeed in the end really!)

"Mui Fa Jong" means "Plum Flower Poles" and refers to the poles on which this dance was performed. The Chen Brothers are the World Champion Lion Dancers, I am informed. Regardless, they really were awesome!

Lions, in seems, are just overgrown pussy cats – they’ll stop right in the middle of something to scritch behind their ears and clean their paws.

I will note that I didn’t see that pole fall at the time, so I’m not sure if that was part of the collapsing mountain side or just an accident.

Motherboard Repair – Computer No Display After Startup

When computer no display at boot up, the first thing we should check is the BIOS. Motherboard BIOS is not only the place to store important hardware data, but also the very vulnerable part in motherboard. The BIOS is quite easy to be hurt, once damaged, system would probably be unable to work. Such failure is usually because the motherboard BIOS has been attacked by virus (of course, it could not rule out that motherboard itself has problems).

Commonly when the BIOS is hurt by virus, all data in hard disk would be lost, so we can examine whether the data in hard disk is complete to judge whether the BIOS is broken. If the data there stands intact, well then there are still three possibilities to cause computer no display.

One, iffy expansion slots or expansion cards like sound card inserting result in motherboard no response and then the computer no display.

Two, incorrect CPU frequency settings in CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) in the jumper-free motherboard is likely to cause no display issue. We only need to clean CMOS to figure out this problem.

The jumper to clean CMOS is regularly near the lithium-ion battery on the system board, usually the first and the second seats are default short circuits, and jump the short circuits to the second and the third seats. If the older motherboard users could not find out the jumper, they can remove the battery, boot up the computer and enter CMOS, turn off the computer after adjusting CMOS settings, put the battery in – through this way CMOS also can be discharged.

Three, motherboard can not recognize memory, memory is damaged or memory mismatches the motherboard. Some older motherboards quite carp at memory, once the memory can not be recognized, the motherboard would have no way to boot up, and some even have no failure alarm. Certainly sometimes in order to enhance the performance of the system, people increase the memory, and they insert different model or different board’s memory which would also lead to the same problem.

When we troubleshoot the malfunction of computer on response on start, we should take heed of the aspects above.

Buying Life Insurance After Being Diagnosed With Cancer

The American Cancer Society estimates doctors will diagnose over 1.4 million new cases of cancer in the U.S. in 2007, with more than 559,650 cancer-related deaths. If you are among the majority of cancer patients and survive for at least five years following your diagnosis, you may face another fight: buying life insurance.

Buying life insurance for cancer patients is challenging, but not necessarily impossible. Your chances for securing a policy depend greatly on the type, stage and grade of the cancer, and even on the treatment plan. There is a relationship between the rate you’ll receive and the curability of your cancer. Certain types of skin cancer, for example, are considered very low risk by life insurance companies and a skin cancer history may not even impact premiums.

Applicants with common and treatable forms of breast and prostate cancer may be able to get a “standard” rating under ideal circumstances. But patients with a history of leukemia or colon cancer may fall into a “substandard” or “high substandard” rating at best, or receive declines. Anyone with cancer that has metastasized likely won’t be able to obtain a policy.

Dr. Charles Levy, senior vice president and chief medical director of AIG American General Domestic Life Insurance Cos., says, “We’re better and better able to differentiate the risks of individual cancers.” Life insurers like AIG American General have sophisticated tables to determine premiums, where they can factor in cancer types and treatments. The end result is better premiums because applicants aren’t lumped together as an “average.”

Most insurers will not offer a policy to someone who is still undergoing treatment for cancer. Depending on your type of cancer, the life insurer may also want to add a surcharge, also called a temporary flat extra. For example, AIG American General sometimes charges temporary flat extras for two to five years, depending on the applicant’s cancer and treatment. The good news is that although these extra premiums can be expensive, they will automatically disappear after a set period of time.

Cancer insurance risk specialists

While a dedicated life insurance agent will search cancer insurance companies to find insurers that will sell you a life insurance policy, in some cases you may be better off seeking out a broker who specializes in finding life insurance for people who have a history of cancer.

These brokers will know the specific questions underwriters will want answered when considering your application. Many brokers have developed relationships with several insurers, so they know which companies offer the best-priced life insurance policies for cancer survivors. Some brokers have experts who specialize in gathering your medical records and organizing them.

By directing your application to life insurers that will view your application most favorably, these brokers will help you find the most accurate price quotes and the lowest premiums for life insurance. Always check the financial strength of the insurer before you buy any policy and be sure that the agent or broker you choose is licensed in your state.

Life insurance strategies for cancer survivors

If you are a healthy cancer survivor, life insurance is even more feasible. There are things you can do to ensure you’re getting the best premium offers possible for your situation.

1. Gather all possible medical records before you apply, from the first pathology report to medical records to treatment records. That ensures medical underwriters have the most complete picture of you, your health, and your cancer history. Having all those records before you apply for cancer insurance will reduce delays in your application process, because your life insurer is going to request them and will wait for them. The information you provide can garner you better premiums in the end: The less life insurer underwriters knows about you, the more likely they are to have to assume you are the highest risk and offer you high premiums accordingly. According to Levy, “If it’s fuzzy, we’re more likely to err on the side of conservatism.”

2. Make sure you have complied with your doctor’s treatment plans. For example, says Levy, if your doctor asked to see you back in one year and you haven’t been back in four years, get to your doctor for your check-up before you apply for life insurance. Your life insurer is not going to offer you a policy without before seeing the results of that check-up. Similarly, if you’ve had breast cancer and you’re due for a mammogram in December and you apply for cancer insurance in October, your life insurer will likely wait for the results of your next mammogram.

3. Get prices from several companies. Policy costs can vary a great deal among companies.

4. See if you can get group life insurance through a professional, fraternal, membership, or political organization to which you belong.

5. Consider a “graded” policy (one with limited benefits) if you cannot get full death benefits. In the first few years of a graded policy, the company pays only the premiums and part of the face value if the insured person dies of a condition, such as cancer, that existed before the policy took effect. If the insured person dies after the specified grading-in period, the company will pay the full face amount of the policy.

If your cancer has been successfully treated, and you are otherwise in good health, you can likely obtain a cancer life insurance policy. If you can show that you are healthy and your treatments have gone well, several insurers may compete for your business.
