When I ask some of my friends who are heavy gamers the question “What’s the most important part in your gaming machine?” They said almost the same answer “It’s the video card man!”

Of course, I don’t argue that the graphic card is like the face of a pretty girl.

But boys, if the girl is always in tiredness and fall down all the time, do you want to make a life long and serious relationship with her? (Yet I still hear some “Yes” answers! What the… )

If you ask me the same question, my reply will be “the power supply unit – PSU.”

Because without it, nothing is going to run. And without a decent PSU, your heavy-duty graphic card and your latest micro chip won’t operate!

No power, no computer, no games. Period!

So now you have it. PSU plays an important role in your PC. Especially when it comes to gaming computers. But how to select a decent one so that it can stand the HUGE amount of electric power consumption?

Let me share with you what I know.

Because there are more than one type of motherboards and each type of them requires different forms of computer supply unit. And pay close attention to the number of pin for your PSU on your motherboard.

Many older motherboards support lesser features, therefore they use 20-pin ATX. Whereas newer versions utilize 24-pin ATX. Take a short amount of time to check your board, it is very important.

Desktop PC’s for gaming or home entertainment are usually MONSTERS!

They always use a ridiculous amount of electric power. Guess what, if you fail to provide them their need, they decline to work! And I’ve seen many mighty computers that consume up to 850W or even 1200W with their PSU!

But in exchange, they will bring you realistic motions from your new (and high requirements) FPS games. Or present you with gorgeous images from photo-editing software.

It is the acronym of Mean Time Between Failure.

It’s just the number of running hours a PSU can provide you. Or to say in other words, how many hours it can work before it fails!

This depends on your activities with your PC as well. When it comes to this attribute, try to look for something like 100,000 hours or so.

It’s a range of electric values that your PSU can provide to other components of the PC.

Because each one of them has different value of input current. Therefore your supplying unit must deliver exactly what they want.

There are always a maximum value and a minimum one. If one part doesn’t get its minimum requirement, it reject to work. Simple as that.

It’s a truth that computer power supply unit can be a HUGE source of noise!

Especially when it’s a low quality PSU, and can’t shut its mouth up when running. For photo editors or entertain-at-home people, noise is a real problem!

Therefore, a fair PSU with no noise even when it operates at its best is a big plus! Consider this attribute when you build your own PC.

If you want a strong PSU, something like 850W to 1200W, I can give you a recommendation.

BACKSTORY: The death of Hades’s 2007 motherboard. (Abit IP35 Pro Socket with 2G of DDR2 800mHz memory.) At the time, I was unsure if it was the power supply (OCZ GameXStream OCZ600GXSSLI 600W power supply) or the motherboard. In the end, both had to be replaced. Not happy that OCZ’s product allowed itself to be killed by a faulty motherboard. My OCZ RAM melted too, so I am done with OCZ. Also had some minor harddrive corruption on my oldest harddrive (which was my C: system drive, which I will be reformatting soon and using only for backups).

Have since upgraded the power supply to a Corsair CMPSU-750TX 750W power supply, and the motherboard to an ASRock P43DE3 LGA775 motherboard with 8G of DDR3 1600mHz RAM (but I could only run it at 1200 or 1333mHz). Between that, and upgrading to Windows 7 (installed on my 2nd youngest drive), it is like a completely different, new, faster computer. Total upgrade cost was about 0. (I’m using the same CPU, an Intel Core2 Duo E6750 2.66gHz.)

Actually, the first replacement power supply was either killed by the motherboard, or I failed to test it correctly with the power supply tester. I RMA’ed it back to NewEgg, and apparently swapped the boxes (or so they claim), so my RMA was rejected, and I was billed a 2nd time. So this really cost about 0 now, thanks to NewEgg being such sticklers. When I finally get the 2nd one back, I’ll test it again. If it’s really broken, I’ll have to RMA it a second time to Corsair. The 5 year warranty should cover it, but I’ll still end up having bought 2 power supplies. Might be time to take up my friend who wanted me to build a computer for her…

Are you married to your computer? Does your wife or husband suspect nefarious activity? Is this affair taking over your life?

Actually, the marriage of man and machine can be a happy one – if managed correctly. The key is mutual respect: knowing the tasks at which you easily outperform your computer and the areas where it can make things easier. Take the best of both worlds and form a more efficient working partnership. Honest dialog and knowledge of your plastic partner, that’s the way.

(Old School Alert) We’ve done it before. Remember the lowly pencil? What an elegant machine! Having the right tool for the job made all the difference, especially because you could use it without thinking and then put it down.

Computers should be like that. They can be like that. They are becoming like that. And it behooves us to understand how to combine their talents with our own in ways that really work, because let’s face it, computers aren’t good at everything. In fact, they really suck at some things. Luckily these happen to be the very things that we (the human race) do phenomenally well, where we just happen to shine.

What People Do Really, Really Well
Given the right conditions, people are great filters of the unnecessary. They are great at intuiting relationships and knowing the one website, the one idea that is most important right now. Humans have natural talents in this area, while computers are lousy at it. Though Google deserves a nod for vastly improving things, it is still up to a human to make the final selection of a site, or to pull from memory a conversation from the other night at that party, or a video we saw two weeks ago.

Where We Need Help

On their side, computers can read incredibly fast, are great at helping us remember by storing things, and allow us to work together at a distance, on our own time, when the inspiration hits.

So let’s combine the best of both worlds in an efficient system that helps us innovate while staying out of the way. If a computer app is simple enough to use and does something that computers are actually good at (while leaving to humans the things we do best), this kind of efficient partnership begins to happen.

Good Apps, Fresh Ideas
What kind of applications help this happy partnership to flourish? Ones that are as simple as possible, but no simpler. Targeted, but applicable in lots of arenas. Like a pencil.

One company that has championed this right-tool-for-the-job, minimalist style of computing is 37signals. There are a myriad of others, like Freshbooks, or … (please nominate your favorite with a comment below). Blatant plug: here at IdeaTree.us, this means building a tool with the conscious goal of helping while staying out of the way. One that, rather than calculating a solution for you, helps you gather ideas like compost for a thought garden and trusts you to find your own novel connections. If that intrigues you, I’d appreciate your taking a look at it.

What tools are in your best-of-both-worlds marriage? What combinations of man and machine are helping you find the “aha”, those gems that you know, but don’t know that you know? What’s your favorite “pencil”?

Best wishes for a happy, balanced relationship.

“Systems that are based totally on mechanical principles, Newtonian thinking, tend to be very brittle. If something is slightly the wrong dimension, it tends to break. Biological systems tend to have different properties…” – Bill Joy, co-founder of the Sun corporation

Buying a New Computer – January 08 Update!

It’s that time of year when new parts are being released and I need to upgrade my guide on buying new during January.

I have already given alot of useful information in my last post, which should be very useful and worth reading.

I will show you 3 different setups at increasing price and performance levels. I am not going to include the cost of a monitor and peripheral devices in these systems, so you may want to bear that in mind when calculating costs as they can add on a few hundred dollars. We mainly just want to look at the best value parts available and justify the reasons for or against different upgrades.

Entry Level System (0-00 AUD)

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo e2160

Motherboard: Good quality ASUS P5K or Gigabyte to suit your choice of processor for less than 0 AUD

Memory: 2gb DDR2 667

Hard-Drive: Western Digital 250GB

Graphics Card: Onboard or ATi HD 512 3850

DVD Drive: Lightscribe/Pioneer DVD Burner

Power Supply and Case: 400-450W will easily suffice and your choice of case, I wouldn’t recommend spending anything more than 0 here. What I do suggest is to go into your local shop and have a look at the range, then make the decision.

This system is very much ideal for the home user. It will handle all office applications with ease and have enough power as a low end HTCP machine.

If you have no intention of gaming, then the HD 3850 is a waste. Simply use the motherboards onboard video, or purchase a cheap ATi HD 2600 Pro, which will easily suffice.

If you are looking to build one of these systems, what I suggest you do is select all your parts, excluding the processor and see how much money remains. From here, you want to do some research into the different processors available and see what you can squeeze into your budget. From there you can look back at your previous selections and opt for cheaper parts if you have the need. The range can be anywhere from the AUD of the e2160, through to 5 AUD for the E6750, if you can afford the luxury

Midrange System (00-00 AUD)

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo e8400 OR q6600 (g0 stepping)

Motherboard: ASUS p35 – look on the website and choose one which suits your budget and needs

Memory: 2gb DDR2 800

Only ddr-800 if overclocking, if not, then ddr-667 is plenty, as any more is a waste.

Hard-Drive: Western Digital 320GB

Graphics Card: nVidia 512mb 8800GT (if none in stock, then the ATi 512mb 3870)

DVD Drive: Lightscribe/Pioneer DVD Burner

Power Supply and Case: 450-550W should be enough. If you plan on overclocking, you may want to consider putting a little extra money into the cooling system. Good recommendations are the Antec 900, Coolermaster Stacker

830 and the Lian-Li range which offer a good quality design. Also, pay extra for a good quality power supply! It is one of your most important pieces of equipment and you do not want it to fail on you (I speak from experience here).

If you want quad core now, which means performance advantages in newer games and an extreme multi-tasking ability, with the potential for a hefty overclock, then go for the q6600.

If you want a fast powerful machine where you do minimal multi-tasking and can achieve a similar performance at this point in time as quad cores and even more potential for overclocking, then take the e8400. Bear in mind, there is a fair price difference of ~0 AUD. If I were to walk out and buy a computer tomorrow it would have to be the e8400, it is the newest technology and will run quieter and cooler with the 45nm architecture.

You could either go for 2gb or 4gb, depending on how your budget is looking, but another rule of thumb is as follows;

Do not get over 2gb of DDR2 ram, unless you have 64-bit Windows Vista.

If you do not have this, the extra ram will not be recognised and it will be a pointless waste of money.

The hard-drive size is up to you, the more storage, the higher the cost.

The 512mb 8800gt is hands down the best value card on the market at the moment for its pure power and thermal control.

High End System (00-00 AUD)

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo e8400 OR q6600 (g0 stepping)

Motherboard: ASUS or Gigabyte 650/680i board to allow you to have SLi. Bear in mind, this will perhaps put the final price just beyond k and I don’t think it is a realistic choice at this stage, but you can at least have the option later down the track. If you don’t want SLi, then stick to the P35 boards.

Memory: 4gb DDR2 800

Hard-Drive: Western Digital 500GB

Graphics Card: nVidia 512mb 8800GTS

DVD Drive: Lightscribe/Pioneer DVD Burner

Power Supply and Case: 550W is more realistic here. Once again, you want a good quality power supply (Thermaltake is a good brand for this) and the case must offer great cooling. I suggest you do some research before buying your case and really decide what you want and need. Many people will still swear by the Antec 900’s cooling ability, but many will tell you otherwise, so realistically, you have to make the decision on this one.

The same issue applies with the CPU in the high-end system as in the midrange as the low price of the e8400 makes it almost irresistible.

The 512mb 8800GTS is simply the most powerful card at a realistic value. Going SLi is a big decision and I suggest you read up on the disadvantages and benefits of it.

I have an article coming up for this so bookmark the site (Ctrl+D) or subscribe to my RSS feed in the top right hand corner.

Difficulty finding my focus – Day 218 of Project 365

22/03/09

As you are reading this deep inside your computer a very similar bundle of chips* are conscientiously working hard to help produce this image and text in front of your face. Without the mind numbingly huge numbers of transistors that exist in every PC, flickr and the whole internet would not exist… and we would have a lot more time to do other stuff

I seem to be having difficulty finding the mental focus (along with my macro focus) for my 365 at the moment. The shots I have been taking over the last week or seem to have been a lot harder to push forth into the world than I found previously. I guess it’s one of the quirks of this kind of project. Although I guess spending more time surfing flickr than I spend sleeping has something to do with it ; )~

This shot is not so much out of focus, it was more that I had great difficulty deciding where to focus. The narrow slit of DOF (depth of field) that this lens setup offers had me struggling exactly where to put the sweet spot. In the end I settled on the connection strip along the edge.

The Exif is all wrong on this shot I took it with an M42 Miranda 80-200mm f/3.5 macro lens plus 61mm of M42 extension tubes. The lens was set at f/22 and I reckon that it’s giving me a macro ratio of about 1:1.5 ish. I bought the lens second hand for £5 a few weeks ago. The light is from my flash on a TTL flash cord to the top of the frame.

Lightroom: direct positive preset, punch preset, push the contrast (I think I was getting quite a lot of flare and that seems to reduce the contrast), use lots of the recovery tool, USM sharpen, save to JPG

(* if you are interested this is a single 1Gb stick of DDR2-800, aka PC2 6400 SDRAM )

Kindle 2, Kindle DX all are the versions of Amazon kindle which are used for reading books, news papers, magazines, text books and all other kind of knowledgeable stuff. I am having the information aboutKindle but I am not having kindle. My problem is that I want to read the books and magazines which are published by Amazon’s kindle. Is there any way out for this problem. If possible reply for this query.

Re: Kindle books to Personal computer.
The Kindle for personal computer application synchronizes with Amazon’s popular e-readers. This feature gives the people to switch from one to the other without losing track of which page they were on and which page is given for doing their work. With a Windows version, Amazon has expanded their potential customer exponentially. Reading books on a computer undoubtedly isn’t the same experience as reading them on a light device or a handheld.

Re: Amazon tranfer Kindle books to Personal computer.
I have a Kindle; I am still using it for my daily reading. I generally take the Kindle everywhere I usually have my notebook because a decent backup reading device. I am still using Kindle for iPhone. If I can sit somewhere and I want to read books for a longer period of time, the ebook will be my tool of choice. And if I have myKindle with me, I can switch between both options whether to listen to music or to read books. The overall thing is that I can switch to anything whether to use my notebook or my kindle

Type of Computer Memory Modules

You can easily boost up your computer performance considerably by upgrading your computer. Upgrading the computer memory is perhaps the least expensive and the easiest way. Consider the computer RAM memory to be a workspace where all the information it requires to act upon are stored on a temporary basis. You can liken it to a desk which you use for sorting through your work. In case the size of this desk happens to be small, your efficiency would get limited compared to a larger desk which would definitely allow you to work more effectively and with more efficiency.

In a similar fashion, a computer that has more RAM has the ability to work more efficiently as it doesn’t need to gather information from the hard disk drive all that often. For users that are working with larger files or who are opening more than one program at one time or are using memory intensive applications like games, graphics or video editing software require memory upgrade most particularly.

How do you know that time is right for a memory upgrade? There are certain signs that indicate that up gradation of memory is needed. In case your mouse pointer turns into an hourglass for long time periods or if you can hear that your hard drive is working or that your computer is slower that what you expect….the reason is because of insufficient memory. When the physical memory gets insufficient the system tends to use up the Hard Disk Space as memory or what can be termed as ‘virtual memory’. The system slows down to a considerable extent as the access time of Physical memory is in tens of NanoSeconds and Access time of Hard Disk is in MilliSeconds.

The DDR2 memory module is the next generation memory technology which enhances the thermal performance, promotes faster speeds, gives higher data bandwidths and offers lower power consumptions. The DDR2 DIMM or the dual inline memory module consists of a range of memory components that are mostly black in color and are attached to a printed circuit board that is usually green in color. At the bottom of the DIMM are gold pins which connect the module and the socket to a larger printed circuit board. The pins that are located on the front and back of the DIMM have no connection with each other.

The DDR2 memory modules come in frequency ranges of 400MHz, 533MHz and 667MHz speeds/data rates. The 240-pin DIMMs provide DDR2 SDRAM memory for desktop computers. Each of the 240-pin DIMM provides a 64-bit data path or a 72-bit data path for the ECC or the registered modules. Therefore they are singly installed in 64-bit systems. Most DDR2 chipsets provide a 128-bit data path as they lend their support to a dual-channel memory. The DDR2 DIMM memory modules consist of incompatible pin configurations, core voltages and memory chip technology and are not backward-compatible.

The DDR2 memory modules have been designed with a different ‘key’ in the edge connector so as to prevent its insertion in to the DDR motherboard or incompatible memory sockets. The DDR2 SDRAM DIMM cannot fit into the standard SDRAM DIMM socket or into the DDR DIMM socket. The DDR2 memory modules with their 1.8V power supply, offer greater power saving over the 2.5V DDR memory modules. The 240-pin DIMMs are in DDR2 PC2-4200 (DDR2-533) SDRAM or DDR2 PC2-3200 (DDR2-400) SDRAM. In order to operate a DDR2 memory, your system’s motherboard must have 240-pin DIMM slots and a DDR2-enabled chipset.

DDR1 RAM or DDR2 RAM – What is on my Computer?

The very common and frequently asked and answered question from many of our clients to buy their DDR RAM memory modules is, How to find the exact type and specification of the RAM memory modules on their Desktop computer or Laptop. For all them the answer was the same and here is the full explanation to find the type of RAM (Whether DDR1 or DDR2) and other specifications like, the FSB(Front Side BUS) of the Motherboard, Clock speed of the memory module, FSB:DRAM frequency ratio, Total size of the memory and total number of channels you are using right now. These details will help to determine what memory module will better suit the Computer or Laptop for upgrading or replacement. Also, it is very easy to find all the details using a free software program called CPU-Z.

The CPU-Z software program is the free and you can get it from many places. Do a Google search for the term ” CPU-Z Download ” and you will get this program to save and install on your computer. Once installed as per instruction following the installation wizard, re-start the computer and run the program. This program once started will give all the above mentioned details on the “CPU” and “Memory” panels by switching the panels from the top lined tabs. Once you got all the details, you may contact your memory module vendor or the manufacturer’s technical representative to get the confirmation of the RAM memory module to use on your system. If you are going to buy a DDR RAM from a online shopping website, make sure there is a return policy if the memory module is not well suit with your computer.
Here the Effective Memory clock speed is the very common frequency written on the packing and on the memory module itself. The actual memory clock is different on DDR1, DDR2 and DDR3.
Effective Memory Clock For:
DDR1 RAM – 2xMemory Clock
DDR2 RAM – 4xMemory Clock
DDR3 RAM – 8xMemory Clock

An Example for memory clock speed of 100MHz on all three DDR RAM types. Let us calculate the effective memory clock speed for all the three types.

Effective Memory clock for DDR1/100MHz/DDR-200/PC-1600 = 2×100 = 200MHz
Effective Memory clock for DDR2/100MHz/DDR2-400/PC2-3200= 4×100 = 400MHz
Effective Memory clock for DDR3/100MHz/DDR3-800/PC3-6400 = 8×100 = 800MHz

Now using the above example, it is very easy to identify what kind of DDR RAM is on a Computer or Laptop. Plenty doubtful questions are still need to be cleared. But this is the basic to find which DDR RAM will suit best on your computer or laptop.

apart from all these better advice is to consult a computer specialist to know the best option on selecting the memory. It is not simply what type of RAM is on your computer. It is about to get the best performance. When upgrading a memory capacity, most of the time the real thing happens is a downgrading of the new memory module by using the new with the old. If the memory clock of the old memory is less than the new memory module, automatically the computer will detect and work to the speed of the old memory not the new one. You will get the real capacity of the memory. But the speed by which the data transfer happens will not change to the new one. The only solution is to remove the old DDR RAM an install only the new DDR RAM. As said earlier, there are many specific settings on the BIOS to set-up while upgrading or replacing a DDR RAM with a new higher capacity and higher speed one. It is highly advisable to consult a Computer hardware specialist before buying and installing a DDR RAM for this very purpose even you know how to install it by yourself.
