But, when used in a commercial environment such as a data centre, where there are usually hundreds of such strips providing power to a range of servers and other electrical machinery, reliability is the measure that is valued over cost.

<p>If power strips installed in a commercial environment kept fusing or otherwise malfunctioning, just because they were cheap, it would be unacceptable. Indeed, the downtime resulting from such a strategy could be catastrophic in terms of both a loss of core business and also for the future of the data centre manager&#8217;s employment prospects!

<p>Of course, it doesn&#8217;t always follow that the most expensive power strips will be the best, but like most things in life you tend to get what you pay for and for those seeking reliability, performance and guarantees it comes at a price. But, rather than install power strips that display no indication of their performance, data centre managers are increasingly turning to units that incorporate remote KWh monitoring with environmental monitoring.

<p>Such units are capable of monitoring power (i.e. Volts/Amps/Power Factor) and energy use and logging the results remotely. In addition, the environment in which they are operating can also be monitored due to external sensors fitted to the unit, thus allowing users to see if there are any power spikes or troughs on the unit or in its surroundings.

<p>Such intelligence when it comes to operating power strips is considered essential by experienced data centre managers, the majority of whom would not approve the fitting of power strips without some monitoring capability. Remote monitoring is even better as it allows the manager to be able to keep track of such units within the data centre by logging into a browser, via an in-built HTTP server. Alternatively and additionally the unit&#8217;s performance can be viewed and logged through a building or network management system using SNMP, or even imported directly into a SQL database using XML data output.

Before even considering power protection, many are facing difficulties even securing enough supply for their sprawling facilities. Research organisation Gartner predicted that by this year (2008) 50% of currently established data centres would have insufficient power and cooling capacity to meet demands. Quocirca found that 43% of data centres are aware of an approaching power constraint with 14% (19% in the USA) having already reached their limit. </p>

<p>This is due, in part, to server sprawl as well as a lack of consolidation between procurement, application management and energy use. But even with a complete change around in management data centres still need to elevate power generation and protection further up the boardroom agenda as their businesses, and those of their customers, rely so heavily on power continuity.</p>

<p>Data centre power protection must focus on availability, redundancy, resilience and serviceability with uninterruptible power supplies at the centre and as the bridge between mains power and standby power (whether a diesel generator, fuel cell or other source). </p>

<p>The most important first step towards uninterrupted power is to categorise loads into critical, essential and non-essential and then size those that warrant UPS protection in terms of their energy use. Critical loads (IT infrastructure, servers, networks, routers and so forth) are those that the business simply cannot function without. They will require UPS protection and redundancy and may even warrant extended runtime. Essential loads (heating and emergency lighting, for example) are those that do not necessarily directly affect business continuity but which may be required for health &amp; safety reasons. They may need UPS protection to ensure their continuity until generator start-up but may not require redundancy. Non-essential loads (printers, canteen facilities) can be temporarily lost in a power failure and do not require any form of UPS protection. </p>

<p>Sizing uninterruptible power suppliesÂ can be tricky. If it is significantly oversized it will run inefficiently and cost more to install. Conversely, âundersizingâ will introduce the risk of system overloads. Whilst an on-line uninterruptible power supply has a built-in automatic bypass for emergencies, running close to design limits with regular overloads is bad practice.</p>

<p>UPS Sizing: understanding the importance of âreal powerâ is crucial for power protection sizing. Kilowatts (kW) are a measure of the real power drawn by the load whereas kilovolt-amps (kVA) are a measure of apparent power. The difference between the two is the power factor (pf) and its size presents challenges when specifying UPS. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>

<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The greatest efficiency comes from operating at a power factor of 1.0 or âunityâ. An uninterruptible power supply, with as high an output power factor as possible, should be specified. A power factor of 0.9 is the standard set by reputable UPS manufacturers like Riello UPS.</p>

<p>An online or double conversion UPS is recommended for the protection of critical telecom or data centre loads. The inverter (which is powered when mains supply is present from a rectified mains supply) continuously powers the load from the UPS battery when mains power fails. The transfer from mains to battery is seamless with no break in supply, which is critical for this type of installation.</p>

<p>Various UPS configurations are available including single, parallel and series-redundant with each resulting in a different level of resilience, MTBF (meantime-between-failure) and availability. </p>

<p>Resilience is built into the UPS in the form of an automatic static transfer switch. A sensor monitors the output waveform of the inverter. Should the inverter fail due to short-circuit, overload or fault condition, the static switch transfers the load to mains without a break. </p>

<p>Planning for the Future:Â data centre loads are not static and will be under constant change and adaptation throughout the life of the facility. A graduated âgrowth modelâ needs to be conceptualized at the outset to allow for future expansion of power protection equipment. </p>

<p>Both NOR and NAND Flash memory were invented by Dr. Fujio Masuoka from Toshiba in 1984.The name &#8216;Flash&#8217; was suggested because the erasure process of the memory contents resembles a flash of a camera, and it&#8217;s name was coined to express how much faster it could be erased &#8220;in a flash&#8221;. Dr. Masuoka presented the invention at the International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM) held in San Jose, California in 1984 and Intel recognizes the potentiality of the invention and introduced the first commercial NOR type flash chip in 1988, with long erase and write times. </p>
<p>Flash memory is a form of non-volatile memory that can be electrically erased and rewrite, which means that it does not need power to maintain the data stored in the chip. In addition, flash memory offers fast read access times and better shock resistance than hard disks. These characteristics explain the popularity of flash memory for applications such as storage on battery-powered devices. </p>
<p>Flash memory is advance from of EEPROM (Electrically-Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory) that allows multiple memory locations to be erased or written in one programming operation. Unlike an EPROM (Electrically Programmable Read-Only Memory) an EEPROM can be programmed and erased multiple times electrically. Normal EEPROM only allows one location at a time to be erased or written, meaning that flash can operate at higher effective speeds when the systems using; it reads and writes to different locations at the same time. </p>
<p>Referring to the type of logic gate used in each storage cell, Flash memory is built in two varieties and named as, NOR flash and NAND flash. Flash memory stores one bit of information in an array of transistors, called &#8220;cells&#8221;, however recent flash memory devices referred as multi-level cell devices, can store more than 1 bit per cell depending on amount of electrons placed on the Floating Gate of a cell. NOR flash cell looks similar to semiconductor device like transistors, but it has two gates. </p>
<p>First one is the control gate (CG) and the second one is a floating gate (FG) that is shield or insulated all around by an oxide layer. Because the FG is secluded by its shield oxide layer, electrons placed on it get trapped and data is stored within. On the other hand NAND Flash uses tunnel injection for writing and tunnel release for erasing. </p>
<p>NOR flash that was developed by Intel in 1988 with unique feature of long erase and write times and its endurance of erase cycles ranges from 10,000 to 100,000 makes it suitable for storage of program code that needs to be infrequently updated, like in digital camera and PDAs. Though, later cards demand moved towards the cheaper NAND flash; NOR-based flash is hitherto the source of all the removable media. </p>
<p>Followed in 1989 Samsung and Toshiba form NAND flash with higher density, lower cost per bit then NOR Flash with faster erase and write times, but it only allows sequence data access, not random like NOR Flash, which makes NAND Flash suitable for mass storage device such as memory cards. SmartMedia was first NAND-based removable media and numerous others are behind like MMC, Secure Digital, xD-Picture Cards and Memory Stick. Flash memory is frequently used to hold control code such as the basic input/output system (BIOS) in a computer. When BIOS needs to be changed (rewritten), the flash memory can be written to in block rather than byte sizes, making it simple to update. </p>
<p>On the other hand, flash memory is not practical to random access memory (RAM) as RAM needs to be addressable at the byte (not the block) level. Thus, it is used more as a hard drive than as a RAM. Because of this particular uniqueness, it is utilized with specifically-designed file systems which extend writes over the media and deal with the long erase times of NOR flash blocks. JFFS was the first file systems, outdated by JFFS2. Then YAFFS was released in 2003, dealing specifically with NAND flash, and JFFS2 was updated to support NAND flash too. Still, in practice most follows old FAT file system for compatibility purposes.</p>
<p>Although it can be read or write a byte at a time in a random access fashion, limitation of flash memory is, it must be erased a &#8220;block&#8221; at a time. Starting with a freshly erased block, any byte within that block can be programmed. However, once a byte has been programmed, it cannot be changed again until the entire block is erased. In other words, flash memory (specifically NOR flash) offers random-access read and programming operations, but cannot offer random-access rewrite or erase operations. </p>
<p>This effect is partially offset by some chip firmware or file system drivers by counting the writes and dynamically remapping the blocks in order to spread the write operations between the sectors, or by write verification and remapping to spare sectors in case of write failure. </p>
<p>Due to wear and tear on the insulating oxide layer around the charge storage mechanism, all types of flash memory erode after a certain number of erase functions ranging from 100,000 to 1,000,000, but it can be read an unlimited number of times. Flash Card is easily rewritable memory and overwrites without warning with a high probability of data being overwritten and hence lost. </p>
<p>In spite of all these clear advantages, worse may occur due to system failure, battery failure, accidental erasure, re-format, power surges, faulty electronics and corruption caused by hardware breakdown or software malfunctions; as a result your data could be lost and damaged. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align: justify;">The data-toggle value enables detecting missed or duplicate data packets in control, bulk, and interrupt transfers. IN and OUT transactions have a data toggle value in the data packet’s PID field. DATA0 is a code of 0011, and DATA  is 1011. In controller chips, a register bit often indicates the data-toggle state, so the data-toggle value is sometimes called the data-toggle bit. Each endpoint maintains its own data toggle.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Both the sender and receiver keep track of the data toggle. Host controllers handle data toggles at a low level that is invisible to applications and device drivers. Some device controller chips handle the data toggles completely in hardware, while others require some firmware control. If you’re debugging a device where the correct data is transmitting on the bus but the receiver is ignoring or discarding the data, chances are good that the device isn’t sending or expecting the correct data-toggle value.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">When the host configures a device on power up or attachment, the host and device each set their data toggles to DATA for all except some high-speed isochronous endpoints. On detecting an incoming data packet, the host or device compares the state of its data toggle with the received data toggle. If the values match, the receiver toggles its value and returns an ACK handshake packet. The ACK causes the sender to toggle its value for the next transaction.</p>
