Unable to Upgrade Memory – Gateway Tech Support doesn’t care

First a bit of background – I am a unix system administrator with more than 25 years in IT. I’ve worked with servers from IBM, HP, Compaq, Dell, Sun, and even the old DEC. I’ve been working with PCs since the 80s. I know PCs. That said then:

I purchased the Gateway LT2119u (the black version) as an easy-to-carry PC solution for an upcoming trip to China. My intention was to upgrade it to 2GB upon receipt so I also purchased the Crucial DDR2 PC2-5300 667Mhz module recommended here (and on the Gateway site). Short story, the netbook would not recognize the 2GB module. Upon power up, it would do nothing – not even get to POST. So I reinstalled the original 1GB module, opened up the BIOS settings and disabled the “Quick Start” option therein and tried the 2GB module again. Same story, nothing, not even POST. I contacted Crucial and they said to update the BIOS and try again. Checking the gateway site (don’t even try calling – there is no direct phone support for gateway) I found I have the most current BIOS available.

So thinking that perhaps, on the rare chance that it was a problem with the memory module, I ordered another 2GB module, this time a PNY with the same specs – DDR2, PC2-5300 667MHz. Same story – the netbook failed to recognize the new module and froze before POST.

So I contacted Gateway tech support via email. Over the course of three days and six or eight email exchanges they (Gateway Tech Support) determined that the computer was working as designed with the factory installed options and therefore this was an “out of scope” issue [i.e. not a defect or warranty problem]. They said they would be happy to turn the issue over to their “dedicated team called “Pay for support” who will be able to provide [me] with the best options available and help [me] further.” Uh, no thanks.

So cutting my losses, I’m returning the LT2119u and going with someone else. Over the years I’ve had numerous dealing with tech support organizations including Compaq/HP, Dell, Sun, IBM, Symantec, and Oracle. I’ve even had good support from TigerDirect on a pieces-and-parts home built gaming PC. I’ve *never* dealt with a more disinterested support organization than Gateway. And I’ll be darned if I ever deal with them again.

So while this may have been a decent little netbook, I’m giving it a 1 star rating (”I hate it”) because of the lousy support I received from Gateway’s Tech Support organization. They spent way more time determining whether the machine was registered, and if it was still in warranty than actually attempting to resolve what I consider a fairly basic problem. And for me this was a showstopper. So adios Gateway.

Great netbook

Bought this because I was tired of lugging my laptop around on trips. This is very compact, light, and fits in an average sized purse. The screen is very clear, the keys are very comfortable, and it can go pretty much all day without needing to be charged. I did order the extra memory with it, I should have also ordered a soft case (I got one later). Great product!

This isn’t the highest of quality or the most artistic either. I just wanted to show my setup at home. Since taking this photo I have added a 400gb MyBook External Hard Drive, XBOX 360, and I am also moving into a new place with a new desk and I will add a external monitor for more fun. I also plan to get some Apple wireless fun as well. Oh, I also got a new ipod nano with the whole nike kit.

Dram : The Difference Between Ddr1 & Ddr2

Dram : The Difference Between Ddr1 & Ddr2

About DDR1.
DDR SDRAM or double-data-rate synchronous dynamic random access memory is a class of memory integrated circuit used in computers. It achieves greater bandwidth than the preceding single-data-rate SDRAM by transferring data on the rising and falling edges of the clock signal (double pumped). Effectively, it nearly doubles the transfer rate without increasing the frequency of the front side bus. Thus a 100 MHz DDR system has an effective clock rate of 200 MHz when compared to equivalent SDR SDRAM, the “SDR” being a retrospective designation.

With data being transferred 64 bits at a time DDR RAM gives a transfer rate of [mbcr x 2 x 64] / 8; annotated it looks like this: (memory bus clock rate) × 2 (for dual rate) × 64 (number of bits transferred) / 8 (number of bits/byte). Thus with a bus frequency of 100 MHz, DDR-SDRAM gives a max transfer rate of 1600 MB/s.JEDEC has set standards for speeds of DDR SDRAM, divided into two parts: The first specification is for memory chips and the second is for memory modules.

About DDR2
In electronic engineering, double-data-rate two synchronous dynamic random access memory (DDR2 SDRAM) is a random access memory technology used for high speed storage of the working data of a computer or other digital electronic device.

It is a part of the SDRAM (synchronous dynamic random access memory) family of technologies, which is one of many DRAM (dynamic random access memory) implementations, and is an evolutionary improvement over its predecessor, DDR SDRAM (double-data-rate synchronous dynamic random access memory).

Its primary benefit is the ability to run its bus at twice the speed of the memory cells it contains, thus enabling faster bus speeds and higher peak throughputs than earlier technologies. This is achieved at the cost of higher latency.

Like all SDRAM implementations, DDR2 stores memory in memory cells that are activated with the use of a clock signal to synchronize their operation with an external data bus. Like DDR before it, DDR2 cells transfer data both on the rising and falling edge of the clock (a technique called double pumping). The key difference between DDR and DDR2 is that in DDR2 the bus is clocked at twice the speed of the memory cells, so four words of data can be transferred per memory cell cycle. Thus, without speeding up the memory cells themselves, DDR2 can effectively operate at twice the bus speed of DDR.

Now that it’s almost a computer, we get to the phase where you turn it on each step to make sure nothing has gone wrong. Notice the "7F" code. I don’t remember what it means, but it’s quite useful that the motherboard has a 2-character LED display for error codes. This lets you debug situations without having a monitor hooked up.

BACKSTORY: So, as mentioned before (in a 10-part series of blog posts), my trusty computer of 9 years, "Storm", died a nasty death. My secondary/kitchen computer "Hell" stepped up to bat and took Storm’s place, but I still needed a new computer for our somewhat newly-built upstairs space. So I built Hades, during which I wrote another 5 blog posts. These are the pictures I took while building it.

Don’t forget to stock up on memory

Don’t forget to stock up on memory

After a while, even the best computers will start to slow down. As you install more applications on your desktop or laptop and you have more programmes running at the same time, it is understandable that a computer will have trouble undertaking more tasks at the same speed as it did before. This is where you need to consider upgrading the amount of memory that you have inside your computer.

When you are running a company then the old saying stands – time is money. You need to be able to rely on the hardware that you are using and if it is sluggish and not up to scratch then your company has a problem. You need to be able to get technical processes done as quickly as possible and having enough memory in your computers is a significant part of this.

If you have never bought memory before then do not rush in as there are a lot of different varieties available. From 184-pin unbuffered memory to 200-pin SODIMM DDR2, there is a massive choice of memory products out there and so it is imperative that you know exactly the right type that fits your computer.

Brands such as Kingston, Corsair and Crucial will all be available if you choose to go through one of the industry’s leading business suppliers. If getting the best choice of products and the best prices possible are things that appeal to you then make sure you find an online retailer that has the experience and choice of stock to make sure you find the right memory to suit your company’s needs.

Of course there are more benefits to buying from a reliable online retailer than simply having a wide choice of products in front of you. For starters you will be dealing with a professional company and that means you can order over the internet with confidence and be sure that your products will arrive with you by the date they have been promised. In addition, if you have never bought memory over the internet before, then you can be sure there will be someone there to help should you get stuck. Whatever the problem, or whether you just need a little advice on the right product to buy, you can be sure help won’t be too far away.

When you’re looking for computer memory whether it’s propietary memory or generic memory, use a reliable supplier who you know you can trust.
