Our personal memories are precious treasures. They recall laughter and tears. They allow us to relive the most important events in our lives. Be they good or bad, they belong to us and are part of who we area.

You can’t put a value on memories. You can’t buy back good times, and you can’t pay someone to make bad times disappear. Childhood memories, happy celebrations, and past wild times and the stuff that formed our personalities. Many people want to document those memories and share them with loved ones and friends.

There are many ways to collect, store, and recall our memories. Modern technology has made it possible to preserve those times in electronic formats that don’t have to be packed, can’t be lost, and never age or deteriorate. Memories last a lifetime, but they fade when stored in the human mind.

Today, people use a variety of things to capture these future memories while they are happening: photographs, video recordings, audio tapes, and correspondence are just a few examples. Photo albums have been popular since the first camera was invented, and they’re still a favorite choice for keeping memories close to the heart. But now, there are many additional choices that a photo album can’t contain.

Scrapbooks are a popular way to gather memories in different formats into one spot and preserve them. They have the advantage over photo albums of being a great way to create an artistic theme and add a very personal touch to your memory bank. Scrapbooks are more interesting and more entertaining that the traditional photo album. But even scrapbooks get lost or damaged.

When you create a scrapbook, you combine your treasured photos with other reminders like tickets, letters, and other reminders and frame them with color, design, and style. You can include memorabilia, stories, quotes, and testimonials in your scrapbook. And embellishments like buttons, beads, locks of hair, lace, ribbons, and yarn add variety and interest as well as memories to your scrapbook.

From the 1990s on, scrapbookers have applied scientific techniques to help preserve photos and memorabilia. Not only have photographs become more durable, but preservation techniques are more effective. You don’t have to settle for faded photos with that old-fashioned yellow tint. Modern science and technology has made it possible to greatly increase the life of photographs and other materials.

Now, modern scrapbooking is a million-dollar industry, and new products and tools are constantly being released to help make the job easier and the scrapbook more appealing. And the Internet is not missing a beat. Hundreds of scrapbooking sites have sprung up across the web, offering tips and techniques, advice, and supplies and materials to web users. Many of these sites offer free help and information, so you don’t have to trek to the bookstore for reference materials.

The advent of digital media has made Internet scrapbooking easier than ever! Software that allows you edit digital materials and transfer photos allows even greater creativity. The combined technologies of digital media, software, and the Internet have created a whole new type of scrapbooking. And because the materials can be stored on the web indefinitely, we now have the ability to create “permanent” scrapbooks that can’t get lost and can’t get damaged.

The Internet makes it easy and convenient to gather, share, and preserve photographs and video recordings. It also ensured that the scrapbook is easily accessible to anyone on the Internet. No matter what time of day or night, and no matter where a person is, they can get to their electronic scrapbook and cruise memory lane as fast as electricity and broadband will allow.

Now, you can replay that video of Uncle Bob’s birthday, your grandparents’ golden wedding anniversary, or little Suzy’s entrance into this world as many times as you want. And you can do it at the same time as others. You can collect, store, and preserve these memories as long as you are willing to pay the often-nominal web hosting fee. You can even use a free service to house your scrapbook.

You can choose to scrapbook in the old-fashioned way and have great fun letting your creative juices flow to create an interesting, artistic permanent paper record of the important times in your life. You can also choose to apply your computer skills and electronic media and let technology help you create a permanent electronic record of those same times.

Whatever approach you want to use is available, affordable, and easy to do. You can create a paper version of your scrapbook as an heirloom for your home and family, and you can add an electronic version to the Internet so that other family members and friends can enjoy your creativity at any time. And if your paper version ever gets lost or destroyed, you’ll have the electronic version as a great insurance policy!

If someone stopped you on the street and asked you to define the term Internet, with a capital I, what would you say? Chances are you visualize the Internet based on the part you interact with: your own computer screen. The Internet that brings a wealth of information to your screen is vast.

It’s made of hundreds of thousands of interconnected networks in more than 100 countries using large computers, called servers, to interconnect them. A network is a grouping of interrelated computers, such as those for commercial, academic, and business entities.Originally developed as a tool for the U.S. military, the Internet has become a tool for communication and research that businesses, governments, and individuals nowdepend on.

A term closely related to Internet, but not synonymous, is the term World Wide Web. Figuratively speaking, it’s a web of documents. The World Wide Web connects documents by the use of web-page links called hypertext markup links.

Images travel over the Internet much the same way as other types of email. When an email message is sent, regardless of whether it contains text or images, it’s broken up into packets of data. These data packets can be transmitted over telephone, cable, and other lines, and ultimately to the destination computer.

What happens next depends on whether you’re hooked up to a network of computers or a stand-alone PC. If your computer is part of a network, an internal routing device determines whether the email is addressed to someone on the same network as the sending computer. If the message is going to someone within a network, it’s delivered and the process is complete.

If your email is not part of a network or is going to another computer outside its own network, a device called an Internet router performs the complex process of locating and directing your message to the network the destination computer resides at.Once the Internet router directs your email to the appropriate destination network, you email might pass through both a gateway and a firewall. The gateway uses the TCP/IP protocol to reconstruct the data packets into a complete message.

A firewall is a type of security device that shields a network from the Internet so unwanted intruders can’t break in and cause damage. Occasionally, for security purposes, a firewall might be programmed so that no file attachments are allowed to pass through. For example, a network administrator might decide that image files have no legitimatebusiness purpose, and take up too much space on the company’s server. When someone sends you an email message, the message is seldom deliveredstraight to your computer. Instead, the message usually passes through a computer called an email server. The email software on your computer periodically logs into the email server and communicates with it to see if you have any mail.An Internet server might be programmed to reject email over a certain size, such as 1 megabyte, so the email server isn’t overtaxed. A megabyte is a lot of text—about a thousand pages of text like this page—but a single high-quality image might be as much as 1 megabyte.
