Men and Loss
Posted by Parkzone Corsair in Memory on December 16th, 2010
BIG BOYS DON T CRY. Big boys don t cry. I can still hear that old tune in my head. The truth is, if we don t cry on the outside, we will cry or get sick on the inside.
You know the toxic rules that men live by when dealing with loss suck it up and go on, deny it and get busy, medicate it by drink or drug (or both), punch or hit something (or someone), don t talk about it, and never, ever cry or show your emotions. Do whatever you have to do to numb the pain pain you know you can t deny for long.
What are the internal costs of living by these false ways? You may know (and be suffering) from these as well anxiety, anger, depression, alienation, addictions, gastric distress, headaches, or whatever else is eating you up inside. Thankfully, men don t has to live that way.
*The Example of David*
When David and his men were returning home from battle in they wanted nothing more than to be with those they loved.
However, I Samuel 30-31 accounts that upon return they found their homes pillaged and burned to the ground. Their families wives, daughters, sons, parents who were too old for traveling were gone. Their entire lives were literally stolen by an intruding pagan army.
David and his entourage melted. The Bible tells us they wept aloud until they had no strength left to weep. Worse yet, David s once loyal men were so distraught by the situation that they talked of stoning him and that each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters.
Then the Bible says something beautiful about David a life lesson for us all. Broken and confused, ˜he encouraged himself in the Lord.
*Facing Tough Times*
Wrapped in all kinds of shapes and sizes, tough times are usually unexpected, unfamiliar and uncontrollable. Loss of a loved one especially a child is the worst kind of loss. But the loss of a job, financial ruin, betrayal, a bad marriage, heart attack, disabling accident, or an illness like cancer all smack of pain and stir that sick feeling inside that life is not the way it is supposed to be.
When life has gone horribly wrong we hurt and naturally work hard to re-cover what was lost or make sense of what can never be retrieved. If the answers don t come quickly, and the situation goes unresolved, stomachs start to turn, ulcers bleed, tempers fl are and wounds begin to go deep into the soul.
If you haven t suffered this way, believe me, someday you will (James 1:3-4). It s not what happens to us that matters the most, it s what we do with what happens to us that is the making or breaking of us. One thing I have learned is that God loves to use powerlessness to send us fleeing back to Him.
*Creating a ˜New Normal *
While we each have unique needs and ways of coping, the following lists nine timeless T s that will serve as ˜constants to help deal with difficult times and create a new normal for your life. Don t expect the old normal to be restored life will be different from now on. But a new normal can be constructed, and will be, as you learn to walk with a greater intimacy with God and others than you have ever walked before.
*Together.*
Most kids are not afraid of the dark they are afraid of being alone in the dark. Don t spend too much time in the dark alone. Spend as much time as possible together with those you love who do not demand a lot from you. The natural reaction is to pull away like a wounded animal and hide to crawl into a corner and withdraw.
Relationships are the antidote to trauma. The power in healthy relationships is that it helps create a safe and supportive environment for healing. This is why a crisis will often bring on a renewal of community goodwill. Neighbors who haven t spoken in months or years suddenly come out of the woodwork of their homes to band together and help their fellow man. As much as possible, find a way to help others and contribute to their solution.
*Time.*
No, time does not heal all wounds. Ecclesiastes 3 teaches, There is a time for everything under the sun ¦ a time to build up, a time to weep ¦ Give yourself time to mourn and heal. Most believe that it takes at least two years to grieve the loss of a loved one. One lesson I have learned is that those who love much, grieve much.

Prevention of Memory Loss Also Prevents Alzheimer’s Disease
Posted by Parkzone Corsair in Business on September 7th, 2010
Itâs a startling fact that more than 5 million people in the U.S. suffer from memory loss. And itâs estimated that about 20% of the 78 million members of the now-graying baby boomer generation could develop heart-breaking and irreversible Alzheimer’s disease.
The good news is that the prevention of memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease are within your grasp. Through lifestyle changes and anti-aging techniques, itâs possible to actually increase your mental abilities â and maintain them well into your seventh and eight decades.
Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D., President and Medical Director of the non-profit Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation, has studied this dreaded disease for two decades. Dr. Dharma believes the best defense against Alzheimer’s disease is to prevent it in the first place.
He has developed a 4-pronged approach to the prevention of deterioration of memory function. Former Surgeon General Richard Carmona has endorsed his work, and The Alzheimer’s Association, the Mayo Clinic and UCLA have developed similar programs.
Dr. Dharmaâs integrative, holistic medical program for the delay and prevention of memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease involves diet and nutritional supplements, physical and mental exercise, stress and relaxation, and the use of prescribed pharmaceuticals.
Diet and Supplements
Diet directly affects the health of your body, but also your brain. A healthy diet is one that should include fresh fruits and vegetables, be low in trans-fats and saturated fats, high in protein gained mostly from vegetables instead of animal protein. It should have the right amounts of the âgoodâ fats, like omega-3 fatty acids, and complex carbohydrates.
In addition, a high-potency multi-vitamin should be taken daily. And supplements of antioxidants and memory-enhancing vitamins and nutrients, like vitamins C and E, coenzyme Q10, acetyl-l-carnitine, ginkgo biloba and phosphatidyl serine, may be beneficial as well.
Avoid the use of tobacco and the excessive consumption of alcohol. Also, get plenty of rest and drink plenty of water. Dehydration can cause confusion and memory problems, as does being tired.
Physical and Mental Exercise
Exercise plays an important part in any health-promoting routine. Make it a goal to include physical activity in your schedule at least three or four times a week for one hour. Walk, ride a bicycle, jog, or join an exercise class.
In addition to your cardiovascular exercise, itâs important to also do mental exercises, or what Dr. Dharma calls âbrain aerobics.â Spending at least twenty minutes three times a week doing mental exercise will stimulate your brain, helping to keep it functioning as it should through the years, and also sharpen your cognitive skills. You can exercise your brain in many ways, including playing stimulating board games, doing crossword puzzles, playing Scrabble, reading a book, learning a new song, or playing a musical instrument.
Of course, the best exercise of all combines both a physical activity with a mental one. Try singing your favorite song or listening to a language tape as you walk or jog. Read a book while riding your exercise bicycle.
Stress and Relaxation
Stress management is an important part of preventing memory loss. Chronic stress has been shown to have an adverse effect on brain health and memory performance. It can contribute to depression and anxiety disorders, which also interfere with normal memory function.
You can reduce stress in your life by preparing a schedule ahead of time, balancing work and leisure activities, set realistic expectations and goals. Meditation, yoga, and deep breathing exercises are all excellent ways of reducing stress and providing relaxation.
Prescribed Pharmaceuticals
Unfortunately, there are only a few pharmaceutical drugs currently being prescribed to treat patients with Alzheimer’s disease, and those only for mild to moderate symptoms
Aricept (donepezil), Rasadyne (galantamine), Exelon (rivastigmine) and Namenda (memantine) have been found to slightly delay the deterioration of memory in patients with Alzheimer’s as well as improve some of the symptoms.
Itâs important to note here that patients taking these drugs may experience serious side effects, such as nausea, diarrhea and dizziness. Your doctor should be notified immediately if you notice these or any other reactions to these drugs.
Hormone replacement therapy and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may also be added to your pharmaceutical therapy program. A frank discussion with your physician will help you decide the right course of drug therapy for you.
Everyone forgets things. And that may increase as we age, causing us to experience âsenior moments.â We notice a decrease in our ability to concentrate, and it may take longer to recall someoneâs name. The good news is that age-related memory loss can be improved â and even prevented.
Following these guidelines â diet, physical and mental exercise, stress management and pharmaceuticals â will help you keep your mind and memory healthy and youthful as you age. The strategies and techniques outlined here will provide you with an integrated and holistic program for the prevention of memory loss, and also help prevent Alzheimer’s disease as well.

Dangers Of Memory Loss Revealed
Posted by Parkzone Corsair in Business on September 4th, 2010
An important cause of losing memory is due to deprivation of sleep. You might have gone out to work or school in your in-house footwear just because your eyes were extra sleepy to change them. You might have even locked yourself outside home as you were very groggy due to lack of peaceful sleep, only too late to remember that your car and house keys were lying on the table in the kitchen. Have you been searching for your sunglasses every corner of your house, only to realize later that it is atop your forehead?
Quite many times memory loss looks funny to others. It would no doubt give you some silly stories producing giggles. Memory loss would serve to reveal forgotten incidents of other person’s experience. Children too, can recall points of memory loss as a result of less sleep.
Resulting havoc
At times memory loss is quite dangerous and sometimes it could prove to be lethal and in some occasions losing memory is just very unfortunate. Deprived sleep would endure memory failure similar to a brain fog, going in a daze, not being able to focus, most often with a void expression. Notice a group of college students or teenagers after some trendy festive weekend. You would undoubtedly find someone in the group with head hanging with exhaustion with open mouths zoning out, or perhaps a void stare.
Furthermore, the worst of all cases of memory loss from lack of sleep is forgetting medicines which have already been taken once. You would end up taking the same thing again resulting in over dosage resulting in side effects, sometimes leading to hospitalization. If your lack of sleep takes you to a situation where you become sleepy to turn off the stove or burner, your house could catch perhaps catch fire with possibilities of injuring children or elderly in your care at home. If you are a young mother you would ignore the disturbances of your new born. Forgetting to change the baby’s diapers could result in horrible rashes causing rawness and pain finally taking quite many days for its cure. When you get behind wheels of any vehicle in a drowsy state, you may not be alert to look both sides or may also forget the pedals on brake and gas momentarily, causing an unexpected accident.
After effects of medications
Medications can sometimes cause sleep disturbances resulting in loss of memory. On the other hand excessive medications too, make it not so easy to lay concentration. Forgetfulness in your job would possibly injure your co-worker or make you lose the job when you forget vital and generic things like meetings which ought to have been prepared for.
Apart from sleep deprivation, there could be other things which could lead to memory failure. However the fundamental thing is to seek a remedy for the trouble. Make sure that you take short naps whenever possible. Keep relaxing before bedtime instead of waiting to be on bed to relax. For new parents, chronic workaholics, or college students burning candles at both ends, it is required that they get adequate amount of rest and sleep, so as to avoid unfortunate events from sleep deprived memory failures. Ascertain to know that unless the mind and body are taken good care of, it would not continue to function right.
